Art Installation

Eye on High

Artscape 2012

Goal | Satirically critique the presence of invasive religious symbols in American public space, and the roots of those symbols in cultural appropriation.

This installation of a 20-foot tall, 15-foot wide God's eye sculpture was part of the Roadside Attraction component of Artscape 2012 in Baltimore, the largest outdoor arts festival in the United States. I collaborated with artist Annie Varnot to build and erect this piece as a rumination on monumental religious symbols along America's highways. The sculpture draws on the traditions of Native American tribes in Mexico, which have been adopted by some Christian communities as a handicraft wherein children create a type of crucifix. We received a grant from the Baltimore Office of Promotion and the Arts to construct three structures and produce educational crafting projects for youth visitors.
